Learn About the City of Laramie, Wyoming

Laramie, Wyoming is the closest major city in the state to the capital, Cheyenne, at a distance of about 50 miles. Though Laramie is not a particularly large city, it remains one of the most important in the state thanks to the presence of the University of Wyoming. The University of Wyoming, or “U-dub” as it is locally known, is the state’s largest public university, and has nearly 14,000 students participating in competitive degrees, such as a Doctor of Pharmacy program. Besides its nationally ranked degrees, the school also has a majority of the city’s cultural attractions, including popular theatre programs held at the Fine Arts Center. The UW Cowboys are also a successful NCAA Division 1 football team that participate in the Mountain West conference. Other educational opportunities in the city include a technical college and the Laramie County Community College.

Much of Laramie’s history is similar to its neighbor, Cheyenne. The city was founded due to its position along the Union Pacific Railroad in the 1860s, and had a somewhat extraordinary level of violence and anarchy during its earliest days, even causing the city’s initial mayor to resign. The state government actually established the University of Wyoming there by law in the late 19th century, which remains the state’s only public university. Modern Laramie, unfortunately, is most commonly associated with the murder of Matthew Shephard, a homesexual student attending the University of Wyoming whose murder would lead the way for the establishment of federal gay hate crime legislation in 2009.
