Sheridan is part of a small, micropolitan area in northern Wyoming, an area that has nearly 30,000 residents. The city has an interesting location, just south of Montana and a 2 hour drive southeast of Billings. As a result, Sheridan shares many of the same media stations as this relatively close by city. Lying just to the west, the Bighorn National Forest starts at the Montana border and continues on southward. The headquarters to this expansive national forest are located in Sheridan. Despite the abundance of natural lakes and numerous creatures in the Bighorn National Forest, disturbing acidity levels in the region’s water are a result of acid rain.
As a corollary to the aforementioned Bighorn National Forest, Sheridan’s most recognizable claim to fame is its location near the Battle of Little Bighorn, which actually occurred just across the border in Montana and resulted in the deaths of General Custer and 268 other US troops. Today, the city is growing at a moderate pace, and has a fair amount of good jobs in the mining, agriculture, and education fields. Still, the average income here is quite a bit lower than other major Wyoming cities, which also coincides with a slightly higher overall unemployment rate. Sheridan often relies on tourism and its position as a travel stop to garner business. The main street historical district is a popular place to stay.
