Learn About the City of Rapid City, South Dakota

Compared to the state’s largest city, Sioux City, Rapid City is located almost across the entire state. The city is nestled against the Black Hills mountain range, and enjoys some fairly spectacular views of the surrounding mountainous terrain. The city was founded in the latter half of the 19th century after a gold strike brought in miners from across the country, who had limited success. The city grew again in the early 20th century as a result of increased tourism, which can be credited to the development of public highways and the creation of Mount Rushmore nearby. Today, Rapid City is the largest city in close proximity to the monument, which was completed in 1941.

In later years, Rapid City’s economy was stimulated by the placement of Ellsworth Air Force Base in the surrounding area. This Air Force base, which still operates, has provided thousands of jobs to the local community, and was an important stage for the Titan and Minuteman missiles, which were some of the earliest ICBMs (Intercontinental ballistic missiles) developed by the US military. Thankfully, all of these weapons of mass destruction are now deactivated as of the early 1990s. The annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in nearby Sturgis is also a major draw to the city. New developments in the area continue to bring increased attention to the area, and, despite the threat of closing Ellsworth Air Force Base, Rapid City continues to grow.
